Storage Drives & SSDs: what to check before buying

Choose computer storage by connection, capacity and use. Start with your device requirements, then compare suitable drives and prices.

Choose internal, portable or NAS storage

An internal SSD must match your computer’s supported interface and physical space. Portable storage connects externally and depends on the host connection and cable. A NAS hard drive is intended for a compatible storage enclosure; buying a drive does not include a complete NAS system. Start with the storage type your device accepts before comparing capacity.

Compare capacity and total cost

Check how much space you use now and allow room for additional files. Compare the same capacity and interface when assessing prices. Review the exact model, packaging and included accessories. Server drives require server-specific checks and should not be treated as automatic replacements for laptop storage.

Storage Drives & SSDs FAQs
Should I buy an SSD or a hard drive?

Choose the drive type your system supports and the capacity your workload needs. Compare suitable SSDs for computer upgrades and NAS-rated hard drives for compatible NAS systems; they serve different installation requirements.

Is an M.2 drive interchangeable with a 2.5-inch drive?

No. The shape, connection and mounting requirements differ. Confirm the interface as well as the form factor before ordering.

Can I use a server SSD in a desktop?

Do not assume compatibility. Check its interface, connector, power requirements, firmware restrictions and the computer’s support for that exact drive.

Does a storage drive include installation accessories?

Check the exact listing. Cables, brackets, screws, enclosures and cooling hardware are not automatically included with every drive.
